Buses and Metro

Unlike many other world urban centers, Milan is not a very large city and it is possible to reach every part of the city by public transport.
ATM is the name of the company that manages the public transport system in Milan: buses, the Metro (tube or subway)and the trademark trams.
The Metro system has three lines: the Red Line (Number 1), the Green Line (Number 2) and the Yellow Line (Number 3)

TICKETS FOR THE BUSES, THE FILOBUSES, TRAMS AND THE METROPOLITAN

There are three different kinds of tickets to get around the city and the suburbs

1. Urban Tickets: for trips inside the city limits;
2. Interurban Tickets: for trips on the interurban lines, that is to say from the suburbs to the respective terminus of the line inside the city limits, or vice versa, or only to and from locations in the suburbs;
3. Cumulative Tickets: for trips that involve travel both inside the city limits and to or from the suburbs

Urban tickets have a single, standard fare while interurban and cumulative fares are based on the distance to be travelled.
The magnetic ticket must be validated at the beginning of the trip and at every transfer onto a different means of transport by inserting it into the electronic validation machine located on board surface transport or, in the Metro, at the entrance gate. Paper tickets (an older form of ticket) must also be stamped by inserting them in the machine designed for that purpose.

For those who will be staying in Milan for at least a week, we recommend buying a pass, which will enable you to save a few euros. The passes available are:

Weekly Pass
Cost:: €9.00 per week
Valid from Monday to Sunday and can be used an unlimited number of times

Monthly Pass
Cost: €30.00 per month
Valid for one month and can be used an unlimited number of times

Yearly Pass
Cost: €300.00 per year
Valid for 12 consecutive months and can be used an unlimited number of times.

If you are students of any school or university, it is possible to save even more. In fact there are two different types of student passes.


1. Daytime students*: up to the age of 26 years with a maximum annual family income of €7,744.00 (for the academic year 2009-10)

2. Evening students: no age or income limits are applied in this case

* Daytime students are those who are enrolled in a school for the compulsory education required by law, in public or private upper level schools with the approval of the Ministry of Public Education, professional training courses recognized by the Region of Lombardy, the Province or the City of Milan or at any University.


Monthly Pass for Daytime Students
Cost: €17.00 per month
Valid for one month with an unlimited number of uses

Yearly Pass for Daytime Students
Cost: €170.00 per year
Valid for 12 consecutive months with unlimited usage.

Monthly Pass for Evening Students
Cost: €8,50 per month
Valid from Monday to Friday from 17.00 to 20.30 and from 21.00 to the end of daily transport service; Saturday from 13.00 to 20.00. Not valid on Sundays.

Where do I request and purchase my electronic pass?

You can request and purchase your electronic pass:
* at any ATM Point
* at one of the authorized dealers(bars, newspaper stands, tobacco shops, stationery shops)

Where can I renew my pass?

You can renew your pass:

* at any ATM Point
* in the electronic vending machines located in every Metro station
* at one of the authorized dealers(bars, newspaper stands, tobacco shops, stationery shops)

TRANSPORTING BICYCLES IN THE METRO SYSTEM

The transportation of bicycles is permitted on the entire network:
•on weekdays from 20.00 until the end of service;
• Saturdays, Sundays and during holidays from the start to the end of service;
• In the month of August every day from the beginning to the end of service.

This service is not allowed during the month of December. It is recommended to check schedules and availability of this service before leaving home by calling the ATM Toll-Free number 800.80.81.81. Tandem bicycles and bicycles endowed with motors of any kind are not allowed to use this service.

To transport your bicycle you must buy and validate a normal urban ticket.


Rispetto a molte altre metropoli del mondo, Milano non è una città molto estesa ed è possibile raggiungere ogni zona con i mezzi pubblici.
ATM è l'azienda che gestisce il trasporto pubblico milanese: gli autobus, la metropolitana e i caratterstici tram.
La metropolitana milanese ha tre linee: linea 1 (rossa), linea 2 (verde), linea 3 (gialla).

BIGLIETTI PER AUTOBUS, FILOBUS, TRAM E METROPOLITANA
Per viaggiare nella città e in periferia esistono diverse tipi di biglietto:

1. biglietti urbani, per gli spostamenti sulla rete urbana
2. biglietti interurbani, biglietti interurbani, per gli spostamenti sulle linee interurbane, dall'hinterland fino ai rispettivi capolinea all'interno di Milano e viceversa oppure soltanto tra località dell'hinterland
3. biglietti cumulativi, biglietti cumulativi, per gli spostamenti sia sulla rete urbana sia sulla rete interurbana

I biglietti urbani sono a tariffa oraria unica, mentre gli interurbani e i cumulativi hanno un prezzo che varia in base alla distanza da percorrere.
Il biglietto magnetico va convalidato all’inizio del viaggio e a ogni cambio di mezzo inserendolo nella fessura della convalidatrice magnetico-elettronica presente a bordo dei mezzi di superficie e, in metropolitana, alla barriera di ingresso; il biglietto cartaceo va obliterato all’inizio del viaggio inserendolo nell’obliteratrice.

Consigliamo a tutti coloro che si fermano a Milano per almeno di una settimana di comparare un abbonamento: risparmierete qualche euro!

Tariffa: 9,00 € ricarica settimanale
Validità: dal lunedì alla domenica per un numero illimitato di viaggi

Abbonamento mensile
Tariffa: 30,00 € ricarica mensile
Validità: 1 mese solare per un numero illimitato di viaggi

Abbonamento annuale
Tariffa: 300,00 € ricarica annuale
Validità: 12 mesi solari consecutivi per un numero illimitato di viaggi.

Se siete studenti di qualche scuola o università, è possibile risparmiare ancora di più. Esistono infatti due tipi di abbonamenti per studenti

1. studenti diurni* fino a 26 anni d’età con un limite massimo di reddito, rivalutato annualmente, fissato in 7.744 € per l’anno scolastico e per l’anno accademico 2009-2010

2. studenti serali senza limite di età e di reddito

*Per studenti diurni si intendono gli iscritti alle scuole dell’obbligo, alle scuole superiori pubbliche o private che abbiano la “presa d’atto” da parte del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione, ai corsi di formazione professionale autorizzati dalla Regione Lombardia, dalla Provincia o dal Comune di Milano e all’Università.

Tariffa: 17,00 € ricarica mensile
Validità: 1 mese solare per un numero illimitato di viaggi

Annuale per studenti diurni
Tariffa: 170,00 € ricarica annuale
Validità: 12 mesi consecutivi consente di viaggiare illimitatamente entro l’anno di validità.

Mensile per studenti serali
Tariffa: 8,50 € ricarica mensile
Validità: dal lunedì al venerdì dalle 17.00 alle 20.30 e dalle 21.00 a fine servizio; il sabato dalle 13.00 alle 20.00. Non vale la domenica.
