EXPOSITION CENTERS

The Palazzo Reale, the Rotonda di via Besana, il Palazzo della Ragione and the PAC - Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea are the city’s great expostion centers and every year they offer an interesting and prestigious calendar of events.

When you find yourself in Milan, we recommend getting the latest information on events. That way you will have the chance to see some of the important temporary art installations while taking advantage of the opportunity to admire the beautiful and epoch structures that host it. In particular, we would like to highlight the Palazzo Reale, the home of the Museum della Reggia, with its 900 years of history and the Rotonda della Besana, a late Baroque edifice, which at its origin was a cemetary for the poor who died at the city hospital

MUSEUMS

The city of Milan is home to over 30 museum buildings. The variety of these structures testifies both to the glorious past of this city when Milan played host to many writers, intellectuals, architects and artists (such as the well known Leornardo Da Vinci) and to its present when Milan finds itself at the center of international design.


CASTELLO SFORZESCO (SFORZA CASTLE)

In one of the most caracteristic monuments of Milan, Sforza Castle (difensive stronghold, ducal palace and military barracks of the city), you can find the Castle Museum (Museo del Castello). Here you can find the Historical Archive, the Trivulziana Library, the Laboratory for Restauration, the Art Library, the Archeological and Coin/Currency Collections, and the Museum of Ancient Art, which draws together examples of Lombard sculpture from the fourth to the sixteenth centuries. The equestrian monument of Bernabò Visconti, the tomb of Gaston de Foix and, especially, la Pietà Rondinini are not to be missed.

MUSEO POLDI PEZZOLI
Right in city center you can visit this museum/home which houses a rich collection of paintings ranging from the fourteenth through the eighteenth centuries. The collection contains some masterworks from artists such as: Pollaiolo, Botticelli, Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, Tiepolo and Guardi. In addition to the paintings it is also possibile to see jewelry, watches, glasswork, porcelain, arms, tapestries, forniture and rugs, all of which adorn the splendid rooms and which take their inspiration from various styles of the past (Baroque, Medieval, Early Rennaissance and Rococò).

MUSEO DI STORIA NATURALE
We recommend that those who have a passion for the natural sciences pay a visit to the Museo civico di storia naturale and especially take part in the interesting didactic events put on by the ADM, Associazione Didattica Museale. This museum is found in the Public Gardens in Porta Venezia, inside a very beautiful building built at the end of the 1800’s in the Neoroman (with Neogothic elements) style.

MUSEO NAZIONALE DELLA SCIENZA E DELLA TECNOLOGIA “LEONARDO DA VINCI”
Situated inside a beautiful monastery from the year 1550, this museum is not to be missed, especially now that it has been renovated. It is impossible to remain unmoved by the collection of Da Vinci’s models and miniatures and, especially the fans of vintage and antiques will remain fascinated by the collection of equipment used for distance communication starting from the 1700’s onward. It is full of different sections and it does not disappoint the curious. Since 2008 it is the home of the Toti submarine, which can be seen up close.

It is not possible to only buy a ticket to see the submarine; you must purchase a general entrance ticket as well. It costs €8.00 to visit the submarine. You can book tickets ahead of time by telephone by calling 02.48.55.53.31 from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 13:30 to 16:00. There is a additional €2.00 service charge for the use of this service.

MUSEO TEATRALE ALLA SCALA
Milan’s famous theatre La Scala also hosts a museum which contains a wide collection of musical instruments, portraits, busts and documents dedicated to the great Italian historical musicians, from Giuseppe Verdi to Arturo Toscanini. In addition, visiting this museum gives those who might be interested and are unable to see a show the opportunity to glimpse inside the theatre (but not backstage)

The museums is closed only on the following days:: 7 December, 24 December afternoon, 25 December, 26 December, 31 December afternoon, 1 January, Easter Sunday, l May and 15 August.
BRERA
The Brera building, which is situated in on of the most charming neighborhoods of the city, was at its origins a convent and its history stretches back to the fourteenth century. It is the home of various cultural institutions: the beautiful Biblioteca braidense (we recommend leaning out of the window to see it if you should pass through the area), the Osservatorio astronomico, the Orto botanico (a small, but lovely garden hidden away in the alleys of the city), the Istituto lombardo di scienze e lettere, the Accademia di belle arti and finally the Pinacoteca, which is really what we are interested in.
The Pinacoteca is a gallery that brings together collections of great interest and artistic value and it affords the opportunity to admire some of the great masters of Italian art. Among the most famous works we would like to point out the Sposalizio della Vergine by Raffaello and the Madonna col Bambino by Giovanni Bellini. Absolutely not to be missed are Cena in Emmaus by Caravaggio and Cristo morto by Mantenga, the master of perspective. (In fact try this: put yourself in front of the painting and then take a few steps to the right and then to the left. It will seem like Christ’s feet are moving!) Another small, but interesting, part of the Pinacoteca is dedicated tosome of the major nineteenth century artists: Boccioni, Braque, Carrà, De Pisis, Marino Marini, Modigliani and Moranti.

MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO
For anyone wanting to get a little taste of the archeological remains from the Greek, Roman and Etruscan periods, Milan offers an interesting collection at its archeological museum. In addition, the museum is found in the same building complex as the small church dedicated to San Maurizio with its marvelous affrescoes. It’s a “must see.”

TRIENNALE DESIGN MUSEUM
This is the flower in the button hole for all that is new and happening in this city. It was created in 2007 and it absolutely must be seen. The permanent exhibition hosts hundreds of historic pieces from Italian design and the temporary exhibitions are always interesting. Call and get the latest info!

CASTELLO SFORZESCO
In uno dei più rappresentativi monumenti di Milano, Il Castello Sforzesco (rocca difensiva, reggia ducale e caserma militare della città), hanno sede il Museo del Castello con il suo l’Archivio Storico, la Biblioteca Trivulziana, il Laboratorio di Restauro, la Biblioteca d'Arte, le Raccolte Archeologiche e Numismatiche, e il Museo d'Arte Antica, che raccoglie esempi di scultura lombarda dal IV al XVI secolo. Da non perdere il monumento equestre di Bernabò Visconti, la tomba di Gaston de Foix e in particolare la Pietà Rondinini.

MUSEO NAZIONALE DELLA SCIENZA E DELLA TECNOLOGIA “LEONARDO DA VINCI”
Ubicato all’interno di un bellissimo monastero del 1550, assolutamente da non perdere per gli appassionati ma non solo, il museo della scienza e della tecnica,soprattutto in seguito al recente restyling . Impossibile rimanere indifferenti di fronte alla collezione dei modelli leonardeschi, o non affascinati dagli strumenti per la comunicazione a distanza dal 1700 ai giorni nostri, soprattutto per gli amanti del “vintage”. Ricco di differenti sezioni non può deludere i curiosi. Dal 2008 ospita inoltre il sottomarino Toti che è possibile visitare!

MUSEO TEATRALE ALLA SCALA
Il famoso teatro La Scala di Milano ospita un museo che contiene un’ampia collezione di strumenti musicali, di ritratti, di busti, di documenti dedicati ai grandi musicisti della storia della musica italiana da Giuseppe Verdi ad Arturo Toscanini. La visita a questo museo consente inoltre l’unica opportunità di vedere la bellissima Sala del Teatro, un’esperienza emozionante, per chi non fosse interessato o non riuscisse ad assistere ad uno spettacolo.

BRERA
Il palazzo di Brera situato in uno dei quartieri più caratteristici della città, era in origine un convento e risale al 1300. E’ sede diverse istituzioni culturali: la bellissima Biblioteca braidense (vi consigliamo di affacciarvi qualora passaste da quelle parti), l'Osservatorio astronomico, l'Orto botanico (un piccolo e grazioso giardino nascosto fra i vicoli della città), l'Istituto lombardo di scienze e lettere, l'Accademia di belle arti e infine la Pinacoteca, al centro del nostro interesse.
La Pinacoteca è una galleria che raccoglie collezioni di grande interesse e valore artistico, è l’occasione per poter ammirare alcuni dei più grandi maestri dell’arte italiana. Fra le opere più celebri vi segnaliamo lo Sposalizio della Vergine di Raffaello e la Madonna col Bambino di Giovanni Bellini. Assolutamente da non perdere la Cena in Emmaus di Caravaggio e il Cristo morto di Mantenga, maestro della prospettiva (a proposito: provate a mettervi di fronte all’opera e fate qualche passo a destra e a sinistra, avrete l’incredibile effetto di vedere i piedi del Cristo muoversi!). Una piccola ma interessante sezione della Pinacoteca è dedicata anche ad alcuni dei maggiori artisti del primo '900, fra cui Boccioni, Braque, Carrà, De Pisis, Marino Marini, Modigliani e Moranti.

MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO
Per chi volesse fare un assaggio di reperti di periodo greco, romano ed etrusco, Milano con il suo museo ne ospita una interessante collezione. Inoltre quest’ultimo si trova nel complesso della deliziosa chiesetta di San Maurizio che con i suoi numerosi e meravigliosi affreschi va assolutamente visitata.

TRIENNALE DESIGN MUSEUM
Fiore all’occhiello della città per quanto riguarda la contemporaneità e assolutà novità per la città, è nato nel 2007, questo museo è assolutamente da non perdere. Il museo permannete ospita centinaia di pezzi storici del design italiano e sempre interessanti mostre temporanee, informatevi!
